Oak Brook Polo Club together teams up with the United States Polo Association to host the40th Anniversary U.S. Open Polo Championship® Alumni Match to be held on Sunday, September 23rd at 3:00 p.m. at the Prince of Wales Field (2606 York Road) in Oak Brook. 

 

This 15-goal match is part of the USPA Board of Governors and Annual Member Meetings that takes place September 19-22 in Oak Brook and celebrates the 40th Anniversary since the last U.S. Open Polo Championship® washeld in 1978 between Abercrombie & Kent and Tulsa. Adding to the history of the event, teams will be wearing throwback jerseys from the memorable final in 1978.

 

“Congratulations to the Oak Brook Polo Club for this milestone and its accomplishments,” explains Beth Marchetti, Executive Director, DuPage Convention & Visitors Bureau.  “Presenting an event of this caliber is an opportunity to furtherbuild upon the already significant legacy of sport in DuPage County, and is timely as we near completion of the first sports tourism market assessment to help us better position our communities within the region and industry.”

 

Oak Brook Polo Club was home to U.S. Open Polo Championship® for over two decades from 1954 to 1978, making it the home of elite professional polo in the United States. In those 22 years, the Oak Brook Polo Club won six U.S. Opens (1960,’64, ’65, ’67, ’71 and ’73).

 

“At its peak, Oak Brook polo drew thousands of spectators, both locally and internationally, to witness the world’s best polo,” adds Danny O’Leary, Managing Director of Oak Brook Polo Club.  “Being awarded the USPA fall meetings is notonly supporting our local economy but helping to legitimize our club on a global scale”

 

The U.S. Open Polo Championship Alumni teams include the following:

 

Abercrombie & Kent-Tom Gose (Hcap-1), Martin Estrada (Hcap-3), Mike Azzaro (Hcap-6), and Steve Orthwein (Hcap-4). 

 

Tulsa -Joel Baker (Hcap-1), Martin Ravina (Hcap-5), Mariano Obregon (Hcap-6), Joe Muldoon (Hcap-2)

 

Prior to the match, the Model T Club of America will host an on-field rally of 10-15 cars.  Culver Academies Color Guard will be in attendance to present for the parade and national anthem, which is being sung by singer/songwriter ErikaBrett.

 

2018 marks Oak Brook Polo Club's 96th season as one of the nation's oldest polo clubs in operation today and fourth oldest sports property in Chicago. Once considered the “polo capital” of the world Oak Brook wasthe destination for American Polo players and enthusiasts.
